Wind Vertical Axis Turbine

Author: Taylor Michael

Like many of us today, I've been looking for ways to save money and get ahead financially. It's getting really old being behind the eight ball all the time when it comes to money.

One of the things I've learned about was using wind energy to save money on utility bills. I've found that I can easily build my own wind turbine and that a vertical axis wind turbine might be the best way for me to go.

You're probably familiar with the traditional windmill style wind turbine. But you may not be as familiar with the vertical style of turbines.

A vertical turbine has the advantage of being able to have more blades, without getting too big. These extra blades can make your turbine more effective since you won't need as strong of a wind to turn the blades. That makes it more efficient.

Whichever style you choose you should know that it is cost prohibitive to buy one. With the average cost of a turbine around a thousand dollars, and up, it will take many years to get that up front cost back.

The good news is that for a few hundred dollars you can construct your own turbine: windmill or vertical style.

There are easy to use instruction manuals that you can purchase that will walk you through the process with 1,2,3 style directions.

Any tools or parts you will need to construct your turbine can be bought at any hardware parts retailer.

It usually only takes a few hours or a day to assemble a turbine, of course that depends on how much time you give to the project.

So build a windmill style turbine, or build a vertical axis wind turbine, either way you should seriously consider building a turbine. The money you save will make you glad that you did.

Vertical Axis Wind Generators

Author: Munya Chinongoza

The vertical axis wind turbine which is sometimes referred to as the (VAWT) for short, is a wind power machine that has been designed so that it maybe attached to a flat roof or stand on a platform in either the rural or urban environment. This type of generator has several advantages to it such as, because of the fact that it can be placed at the bottom close to the ground, the tower does not have to support the generator can be placed at the bottom, not only that but the turbine does not need to be pointed in the direction of the wind.

Although it certainly has its advantages, the turbine also has its disadvantages. Some of the disadvantages are that it is not an easy task to mount vertical axis turbines onto towers, because of this they normally have to operate slower and get the turbulent air flow close to the ground, which results in a less efficient energy extraction.

They only produce roughly 50% of the energy that a horizontal wind generator produces. They also have to be installed on a flat piece of land nothing steep and although steepness of an area might be a problem for a vertical wind generator, that is not a problem for a horizontal wind power generator.

However, like I said before it is not all negative there are also many advantages. Some of these include that seeing how the rotor blades are vertical, you do not have to have a yaw device so this reduces the need for a bearing and its cost. Vertical wind power generators can be at lower heights which can be useful when having to deal with laws that have certain height restrictions to them. Finally, smaller vertical wind generators are much easier to transport.

Building vertical axis wind turbine using recycled parts

Author: satabdi mazumder

The earth is becoming full of non biodegradable things .If those things are put to use for a good purpose then it will be wonderful. The home made turbines will prove cast effective and will provide good amount of electricity .Since the wind turbine is prepared from the recycled waste therefore it saves money and reduces home electric bill. Again the wind turbine reduces global warming. It needs minimum knowledge about how to connect batteries or home breaker panel .This can be easily prepared by using inexpensive PVC and some other tools.

Difficulty - it is moderately easy one.

Time - It will take at least 2 days time for being fully prepared.

Things that will be needed are measuring tape, protector, pencil, jigsaw, straight edge and 8 inch PVC pipe 2 ft

Method

  1. Straight edge is needed to be placed against the tubing and a line has to be drawn along 2 feet of PVC tubing.

  2. With the help of the protector measure 75 degrees around the tubing from the justly drawn straight line. Then mark a point there. From the point use the straight edge and draw another straight line along the tubing

  3. The second step has to be repeatedly drawn in order to have five lines of PVC. Four 75 degree one 60 degree section have got and the 60 degree is leftover in 360 degree circle.

  4. In order to draw five PVC strips the cut has to be made along the drawn lines. There should be four strips of 145 mm and one strip which is 115 mm wide.the smaller one can be discarded.

  5. The PVC section has to be placed on a flat surface with the inside curve facing downward. A point has to be marked at the bottom end of 115 mm from the left edge. Then a second mark has to be made on the top end of 30 mm along the left side. With a diagonal line the two parts has to be joined. The remaining three PVC pieces has to be joined in similar way.

  6. A cut has to be made along the diagonal line in order to make two PVC blade shapes from each section. For other PVC section the step has to be repeated. Each blade must be of 115 mm wide and 30 mm at the narrow end having one straight side and another diagonal side.

  7. Eight PVC shapes have to be placed on a flat surface with inside pipe curve downward facing. A mark of each shape has to be made on diagonal line, 75 mm from the corner side of the wide base on the diagonal side. A second mark of 25 mm from the straight edge along the wide side and one point on the diagonal side. Two marks are to be joined with a diagonal line to prepare a triangular section on the corner side.

  8. The triangular section on each blade has to be cut off. The section blade is to be removed for avoiding interference with the blade hub.

Tips

PVC though durable, can degrade in sunlight. The PVC has to be painted if it is not UV protected.

7 Types of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine - Benefits Available!

Author: Abhishek Agarwal

You may already be familiar with wind turbines, but did you that are actually two types: Vertical and Horizontal. They each perform differnt functions, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. To decide which one is the best for you, look at your needs. Both share the same common factor as they produce energy by using the wind, except that they do it differently. The main rotor shaft in a Vertical Axis Turbine runs vertically rather than horizontally, hence the name. There are of course advantages and disadvantages for it being in this direction. One of the best advantages is that the gearbox can be placed at the bottom of the turbine, which is not possible in a horizontal turbine, so the top of the tower does not carry all the weight.

Another advantage of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines is that it does not have to face in the wind's direction. The disadvantage is that it produces smaller amounts of energy than a horizontal turbine, and if the turbine is running in the same direction that the wind is blowing you can get pulsating torques through each turn of the turbine.

Types of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines

1. The newest type of turbine out at the moment is a windmill which has a rotation sail. When it is in operation the sails look like those you find on a ship, that expand or contract according to the change of winds. Each has three sails where the speed is controlled by a magnetic counter which expands or contracts the sails as needed. To minimise the damage to the sails there is a control unit for this purpose. The sails can tear during a large storm but the frame is very durable.

2. There are aerodynamic turbines with blades just like a plane made of airfoil base in order to capture the wind's energy. They are so designed to catch this artificial current of kinetic energy to the centre. A very effective wind turbine it runs at full capacity most of the time to utilise all the wind energy by redirecting and lifting it upwards to the turbines there. It not only responds to the wind but also free flowing water systems such as creeks, rivers, streams and oceans.

3. Darrieus Wind Turbines are known to be efficient but they are big machines for their shape and size. Because a lot of cyclic stress that is put on the tower it does tend to wear out sooner. It consists of three blades which are shaped like loops which connect to the top and bottom of the axle, and often called the "eggbeater windmill" because that is what it resembles. They are connected from the ground upwards by large external structures which hold it up.

4. The Giromill consists of three vertical blades and was based on the patent of the Darrieus design. It is very low on maintenance as it self starting. The blades of strong, light material which are more robust to cope with the stresses placed upon them. They require less blade speed to channel energy with each turn of the blades as they are very high performing.

5. Savonius Wind Turbine mills usually consist of two scoops which convert windpower into torque on a rotating shaft. There also some which are self starting and feature three scoops. They are quite similar looking to helicopter blades except they are bent in a certain style and shape to provide enough energy to be of use.

6. The blades of Windstar Turbines are straight and made of aluminium. They are attached to either end of a central rotating shaft. There are a number of rotors with their own unique dual braking system of pneumatic disc brakes and blade pitch. Windstar Turbines were designed for locations with stronger winds.

7. Vertical Axis Wind Turbines have many advantages as the running costs are low and they are easier to maintain. They can almost withstand any type of low or high wind. They are smaller which means they can be transported easier. The disadvantages are that producing efficient energy from winds takes twice as much time. The turbines have to be installed on flat land and some models require guide wires, which adds more stress to the bottom of the tower; and they have a low starting torque. A consumer has to look at a design that is suitable for them by deciding on the best one for their needs.

To find make your own wind turbine guides to a wind turbine of your own is not that hard. It is important to get started with wind turbines blade outbputn, finding a tower and finding all of the parts you want first.

need to get started with your windmill?

Detailed wind turbine instructions Regular tools that could be found at all workshops 4 days are needed to complete the wind turbine with your own tools.

The total cost for a made turbines will cost you 2200$+ giving you a very low output turbines.

We just couldn't think the prices when we started attempting to find one a few years back. We made a decision to make our own with wind turbine manuals we could find.

It truly wasn't that tough either all of the were straightforward to find and the process of building wasn't sophisticated either.

I made my first in 2weekends ( now i have 3 built ) .

I suggest that you order the Direct Current motor important to generate energy for your home after you start, do this first. It takes a few days to have it delivered to your home from the sources listed.

While you are waiting you can make the wind turbine blades and find an appropriate tower.

A small one is best made out of PVC blades but you will be limited to about 5 foot blade dia ( three foot individual blades ). This size will only make about 500 watts in energy but it is a good start.

If you try and use PVC for bigger blades they have an inclination to break under high wind forces as i found out this past year when one of our PVC blades broke.

My two bigger windmills are made with wood blades. You can use cedar, spruce or hard woods for blades larger than 7 foot diameter. Which is the minimum to produce 1000 watts . The wind mill manuals to make one show you the simple way to make very simple blades for your windmill.

You can use old TV towers for your own tower to get your blades up there. Take it slow assembling all of the parts according to the instructions so that your wind turbine works .

Isn't it time you got started manufacturing your own cheap electricity for your house? Aren't you tired of $400 poweral bills? I know i sure were just before i moved off the grid and started using replaceable energy.

What Is Vertical Axis Wind Turbine?

Author: lankaprex

Lots of us have very hard time financially & will welcome anything, which can stop, or else slow down, financial bleeding. We may not keep heads above the water as water is continually rising. One of biggest things that you may do in order to save a few money is lower the utility bills. You might be hearing all hype about the wind turbines as well a the vertical axis wind turbine, however what it means? Using power of wind to run the machines is not the new concept. It has been around for several years. We have got know how you can make that work more efficiently as well as we can store that for use at later time.

Advantages of the vertical turbine is you may actually add a lot more blades without even taking up more of room. With more and more blades turbine is 'sensitive' and will work with the lower wind speeds.

It does not matter what style of the turbine that you select for home use it will not be cost effective for buying a turbine. The turbines will cost plenty of dollars in a few cases & it will take a very long time getting the investment back. Also, there is hope, you may very easily build your turbine and there are the manuals on internet that can walk you through process. Making the turbine is actually very easy as well as you will not need to have previous experience, and skills. Materials that you will need to build the turbine is bought locally anywhere hardware products are been sold.

For most of the people it will just take one day or so for building the turbine. Doesn't matter which way that you choose to go: windmill style, and vertical axis turbine you are happy to know it will not cost a much for building but it can save you much on the energy bills. It as well does not have to get pointed in direction of wind. Disadvantages of the vertical axis turbines is there are pulsating torques, which will happen during every turn when turbine is running in same direction as wind. They make the smaller amount of the energy from wind.

Different Kinds of the Vertical Axis Turbines

Windmill with the rotation sail and this kind of the turbine is newest out since it looks like the sails on ship when it is up & running. Sails will expand or else contract to changing winds. Also, there is 3 sails on it & speed is also managed through the magnetic counter, which expands or else contracts the vertical sails. Also, it has the control unit, which can help to control sails so damage can be minimal. Sails may tear but frame is durable & may last through storms.

The aerodynamic turbine is also made up of the airfoil base, which is made to capture kinetic energy to flow from the artificial current to center. It may use most of air mass, which passes through redirecting that over upper turbines. It will respond to wind as well as creeks, rivers, oceans and other free water flowing systems.

Are you looking for an inexpensive way to build your own vertical axis wind turbine? Here's a way to go better than inexpensive - how about cheap? It's a DIY vertical wind turbine. All you need is a broomstick, four ball bearings, two buckets, and some pipe. It's easy as pie if you follow the steps given below.

Get the Parts You'll Need

1. Four ball bearings with an inner diameter of 25mm and an outer diameter of 50nn,
2. A broomstick handle that fits inside the bearings.
3. PVC tubing with a 50mm inner diameter.
4. An end cap for the PVC tubing.
5. Two large buckets.
6. A handful of plaster screws at least 50mm long.

Prepare the Bearings

1. Pry off the seals and remove all the grease.
2. Rinse the bearings with turpentine to ensure that they spin easily.
3. Replace the seals.

Make the Shaft

1. Cut the PVC tube slightly shorter than the broom handle, and then cut it in half.
2. Slide two bearings to the center of the broom handle. Tap them on if necessary.
3. Slide on the two PVC tubes and tap them in place for a tight fit.
4. Tap the other bearings into the open ends of each tube.
5. Fit the end cap onto one of the tube ends.

Create the Blades

1. Cut both buckets in half vertically to create four blades.
2. Using a hole saw, cut a hole in the top of each of the four halves, so it fits over the top of the broom handle extending from the top of the shaft.

Attach the Blades

1. Screw on one blade to the top of the shaft.
2. Add some screws down the side.
3. Add another blade as described in the previous step.
4. Add the other two blades as described above, but below the first two, and rotated 90 degrees.
5. Drill some small holes where the top two blades meet the bottom two, and lash them together with wire to stiffen the assembly.

Congratulations. You've just create a cheap DIY vertical axis wind turbine. Set it up to turn your generator, and test drive it. It should run very well at wind speed of about eight miles per hour.
